Historic Transformation: The Livery Venue Opens as the Premier Event Center in Brownsville

Brownsville, TX – Jan. 28, 2025 – Located at the corner of 10th and Adams in historic downtown Brownsville, the Hicks Livery Stable building has been a fixture since 1909. With its distinctive balcony supported by seven columns, the building remained vacant for many years, having undergone several transformations throughout its history.

The building opened 115 years ago in January of 1909 as a livery stable renowned as one of the finest in the Gulf Coast. It is now a modern venue with rustic, industrial finishings and a rich past ready to tell new stories.

The Livery Venue, located at 1009 Adams Street, has undergone an impressive transformation led by Origo Works’ design and construction teams. It is now reclaiming its former glory. Over the decades, it transformed into an automobile garage, auto repair shop,  furniture store, and second-hand clothing store before falling vacant for decades. In September 2024, the building began its latest chapter, combining historic charm and contemporary design to create a venue that honors its past while looking forward.

“Our goal was to honor the building’s historic integrity while giving it the updates and restorations it deserved for this new chapter of its life,” said Ramiro Gonzalez, Origo Works’ Business Development Director.

“The transformation reflects a balance of preservation and progress, allowing the space to retain its unique character while meeting the modern needs of our community.”

The Livery Venue offers a versatile and elegant space in the heart of downtown. Its expansive 11,700-square-foot first floor provides a dynamic setting for weddings, corporate events, and community celebrations. High ceilings, rustic beams, and industrial touches give the venue a unique character that blends history with modern sophistication. A prep kitchen, dance floor, and state-of-the-art AV system meet the needs of any event, whether intimate or grand. The venue can accommodate up to 500 guests.

“It has all the amenities needed to host any event. You don’t have to look far to find your ideal wedding or party venue; you can host that experience here, in the heart of Brownsville.” Co-owner Cecilia De La Garza said.

Livery Venue’s historic architecture and design promise to create a vibrant community gathering place. Additionally, the second story features 5,000 square feet of office space available for rent, making it ideal for small business owners.

“We fell in love with the building’s character and saw its potential,” Livery Venue co-owner Alma De La Garza said. “Downtown Brownsville is growing, and we wanted to add to the transformation.”

“The venue is truly a labor of love,” said owner Raquel Varela. “We aimed to create a space where memories are made, celebrated, and cherished while also restoring the integrity of Brownsville’s history.”

The Livery Venue, in partnership with the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. The event will be open to the public, who will be invited to experience this beautifully restored space.
